Multiangle DVD
Here's a project I've been working on for a while - I tried it almost 2 years ago, and I got frustrated with it and scrapped it.
Recently I figured out a few tricks and decided to try to tackle it again. So here's 9-1-91 - just press the "angle" button on your DVD player remote and you control the shots. Pretty cool.
Is it perfect? Probably not. You can pick it apart if you will, but I just made this as a novelty type of thing, not to be taken too seriously.
I had a lot of fun with this, and once I got the final project burned, it was cool seeing if I could time it right and get some cool multi-cam stuff going on.
A little bit about it, the creation and the sources - please don't make me write up the lineage, i'll need a protractor to figure it out and I don't have one handy. I'll supply what I know.
Both sources were ripped from Barry's transfers, but were re-encoded to 5 MB/s to be compliant to DVD specs.Bitrate viewer shows the max bitrate at just above 4MB/s though, in the future I will experiment more with this. My copies are as follows:
Front: vid(2)>d8(1)>dvdr(2)
Side: vid(1)>d8(1)>dvdr(1)
The audio came from a CD which I recieved a while back as ana(1)>cdr(5) - it was closer to 45min, so i assumed it as AUD#2. When syncing it to the video however, i noticed that the CD source ran faster and needed to be time corrected quite a bit. I also noticed that the audio for the side shot had more low end, and it mixed nicely with the CD source, which seemed a bit thin. The final mix was compressed to AC3 448Khz to allow more video headroom. If there's interest in me torrenting a flac of the original PCM mix, let me know.
The video sources have different cut points in them, so in order to maintain fluidity, I duplicated the other video to avoid blank screen potions of video. For example the multiangle doesnt really start until around 4:30 during Polly, so pressing the angle button before that will be the same video source. That only happens in or or two more spots during the whole show, however. I think just before the solo for In Bloom is the only other noticable spot.
There are lots of times when both cameras focus on the same area, and the view isn't much different, or when one angle has a good steady view, and the other just has kurt in the lower half or lower corner of the screen. Heh.
There are some good angle separations during a lot of it though, one will be focused on Kurt, while the other will be on Dave, or both Dave and Krist. It's cool to play around with.
I hope you enjoy my latest contribution, I had fun making it - it was authored using 2 different applications- I have similar projects in the works for this year. I'm still learning a whole lot :)
Now I just have to remember how to do this torrent thing.
It would be pointless to say not to encode to lossier formats as that's what the final product is, but I've yet to see a multiangle VCD ;)-
Don't be an asshole and sell it.
