Dusty tapes (Psychedelic Closet)
There I was, in my basement, digging through a box of tapes, looking
for my tape of Gilmour ordering lunch - which, if you haven't heard
it, is brilliant - when I happened to stumble across an old VHS tape
that I'd completely forgotten about. Perhaps I never knew about it.
Perhaps it was abandoned in my basement by gnomes. But, that's a
different conspiracy altogether. The point is that the VHS tape was
labelled "1974 background films". Sounded good to me. I played it &
was disappointed by the picture quality.
And, the films have no sound. I continued to dig around and found
several additional copies - mostly as "bonus" material on some
unrelated tape. They were all *much* worse than the first tape... and
all silent. I thought that it might be fun, for my own archives, to
capture the films and dub on some music. But what music to use ?
Well... I thought I would just use one of the more popular 1974
gigs -
the 16-Nov-74 "pre-FM broadcast" show that I recently received. And,
that's really where the trouble all started. The problem was that it
was not immediately obvious which song went with which film. There
are two, for example, that are primarily flames. So, I began looking
for other backdrop films from the same era, hoping to find some
clues. And... then, I thought that it might be nice to gather up
all of the examples and include them on the DVD - for myself - as
reference material. And... I think you can imagine what kind of
slippery slope that became. Soon, I was gathering all of the backdrop
films that I could find.

In the end, I had to make some educated guesses about which songs
went with which film. *sigh* I think I got them correct. Here's the
begging and pleading portion of today's Weed Announcement - If you
have a better copy of the 1974 backdrop films or if you know for a
fact that I have mismatched a song & film, PLEASE do not hesitate to
get in touch.
I made some copies of the disk for the nice Inner Circle guys -
essentially asking if they saw any glaring mistakes on my part.
They convinced me to make it an official PC release. (Plus, Mr.
Hutchison - once again - has created some brilliant cover art - and
it would be a huge shame if you weren't able to share it!!)
Well over half of the completed project is fantastic picture
quality - having been taken from some really great sources.
Personally, I think that the copy of Brain Damage / Eclipse is
better than the copy on the Harvested PFVA. The original 1974
backdrop films are still there - and they don't look great - but
they're the best we've seen. (And they sound GREAT!)
If you're a Dark Side of the Moon fan, you'll really enjoy this disk.
Thanks to the frisky gnomes! Thanks to Mr. Hutchison!
